In a tragic incident in late November 2021, a 32-year-old woman in The Hague ended her life using a suicide substance. Prior to her death, she had extensive WhatsApp communication with an 80-year-old member of the Coöperatie Laatste Wil about her desire to end her life.
While suicide itself is not illegal, assisting or inciting suicide is. The court sentenced the man to a 12-month suspended prison term and 240 hours of community service for encouraging and intentionally aiding in the woman's suicide.
The court found that the man repeatedly encouraged the vulnerable woman to proceed with her plan despite her uncertainties, making the decision seem irreversible. He also provided specific instructions on the usage of the suicide substance and intervened in the payment process.
The man's actions crossed ethical boundaries as he actively facilitated and guided the woman in ending her life. The court took into account his age, 80, and the duration of the legal proceedings in sentencing him to a 12-month suspended prison term and 240 hours of community service.
